GU-14 White Crowned Champions At Manchester United Cup

The GU-14 White team coached by Scott Murray brought home the championship at the 2009 Nike Manchester United Cup in Beaverton Oregon on the Nike World Headquarters campus.

After a slow start on the first day where the girls had a tie (0-0) against Colorado Rush and a loss (1-0) to Arsenal, the girls came storming back with a 3-1 thrashing of Mustang from Northern Cal and an all heart come from behind against PDA from New Jersey (2-1) to win the group. The U-14’s then faced Legends from Southern Cal in the quarters and defeated them 2-0 on spectacular goals from Kristiana Konkol and Nicole Kawamoto. In particular, Kawamoto’s goal was selected goal of the day and received a new pair of Nike Mercurials for the effort.

The semi-final match up had the girls against Ohio Premier where the team exploded for two goals in the first three minutes of the game by Angie Weiner en route to a 2-1 victory. The final matched Real So Cal against friends and rivals Slammers FC. In arguably the best played game of the tournament with chances for both sides it came down to pk’s where RSC came out on top and earned the right to represent the U.S. at the Gothia Cup in Sweden for the right to be crowned World Champion. Besides conducting themselves in exemplary fashion on and off the field, the golden boot for the tournaments leading scorer went to Angie Weiner from RSC. In addition to an all expense paid trip to Sweden for the team, the girls will be completely outfitted by Nike for the event with new uniforms, sweats, shoes, travel gear, balls, shorts and T’s.

Congratulations girls on an outstanding once in a lifetime achievement!
