Jack Thomas “ JT” May III (born January 17, 1974, in San Antonio, Texas) is an American club soccer coach who is currently with Real So Cal Soccer Club in Los Angeles, California. He has been coaching with Real So Cal Soccer Club (formerly known as So Cal United and Samba) since its inception in 2007. However, May began coaching in 2001 with So Cal United Soccer Club, now Real So Cal Soccer Club, and has taken part in 3 of 6 USYS National Championships as an assistant coach to Program Director and Head Coach Alberto “ AB” Bru.
Personal/Education
Coach May resides in Woodland Hills, California and is married to Andreia Hachimoto-May. In May 2011, he received his Master of Arts Degree in Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy at Phillips Graduate Institute in Encino, California. In December 2009, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis on Family Studies from California State University, Northridge.
Playing Career College Soccer
May began his college soccer career in 1992 at NJCAA National powerhouse Richland College. As a Richland College Thunderduck, May had the opportunity to play for the only coach in the history of Texas A& M soccer; women’s head coach G. Guerrieri. Also on staff at Richland College during the fall of 1992 was current Director of Coaching for the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Tom Durkin. After a 3 year hiatus due to an ACL knee injury, May found his way to Santa Barbara California. He then played for Santa Barbara City College under Coach Tim Vom Steeg. May served as captain for the 1996 California Community College State Champion Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros. In 1997, May played one season for the 2007 NAIA National Champion Azusa Pacific University men’ s soccer squad.
Youth Soccer
May grew up playing competitive club soccer in Dallas, Texas. As a youth soccer player in Dallas, May had the opportunity to play for Hassan Nazari, Dallas Texans Soccer Club Founder and Director of Coaching. He also had the opportunity to play for current Dallas Texans veteran coaches Keith Hodder and Chas Bradley.
Coaching Career Santa Barbara City College May’ s first competitive coaching job came in 1998 when he served as assistant coach to Tim Vom Steeg’s Santa Barbara City College men’s soccer squad. May and Vom Steeg’s guided the Vaqueros the California Community College State Championships Final Four.
UC Santa Barbara In 1999, May was hired as the assistant coach of Vom Steeg’s UC Santa Barbara squad. The Gauchos men’s soccer program received immediate results. UC Santa Barbara went from a record of 2-17-1, under their former coaching staff in 1998, to a record of 13-7-0 under the direction of May Vom Steeg in 1999.
Southern Methodist University In 2000, May served as volunteer assistant coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas to Head Coach Schellas Hyndman, current FC Dallas Head Coach and 2010 MLS “ Coach of the Year”. In the 2000 season, the SMU Mustangs made their first NCAA Division 1 Final Four appearance. However, the Mustangs fell short in the semi-final to the eventual 2000 NCAA Division 1 National Champions, University of Connecticut.
Real So Cal May’s first competitive club soccer job came in 2001 with Nationally ranked So Cal United soccer club. At So Cal United, May worked with established coaches such as Scott Murray, Kristy Walker, Steve Sampson and Program Director Alberto “ AB” Bru. Once settled in with So Cal United, May took on the assistant coaching role under mentor Alberto “ AB” Bru. May and Bru won 3 USYS National Championships together in years 2005, 2006 and 2007. As a head coach, May guided the Bu14 So Cal United squad to a Cal South National Cup championship in 2003. May has coached numerous collegiate scholarship soccer players, as well as Major League Soccer players.
Currently, May serves as Youth Program Director with Real So Cal Soccer Club, has a USSF “B” license and USSF “ Y” Youth license.
